Smoking kills. Smoking is the biggest cause of death and illness in the UK with more than 120,000 people dying each year from smoking related diseases such as heart disease and lung cancer. The fastest way to improve your health is to quit smoking. The health benefits of stopping smoking start almost immediately; after only 20 minutes your blood pressure and pulse return to normal, within 8 hours the nicotine and carbon monoxide levels in your blood are halved and within 1 year the risk of a heart attack is halved.

How does this stop smoking service work?

You can be prescribed a medicine called champix (varenicline), it is known as chantix within the USA. Champix is a prescription-only pill that provides relief from cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Champix works on the pleasure centre of the brain to cut the satisfaction smokers get from a cigarette. This means that if you have a lapse and smoke a cigarette, you will find it less enjoyable and are more likely to continue to want to quit.

How to take your stop smoking oral tablets:

The use of this oral medicine follows a set pre-determined route. You set a date to stop smoking, and then start taking the tablets 1 or 2 weeks before this date. Treatment normally lasts for 12 weeks. The dose is increased gradually in the first week of treatment and the medicine is then taken twice a day for 12 weeks. If you have successfully managed to stop smoking at the end of 12 weeks, your doctor may offer you a further 12 week course of treatment. The tablets should be swallowed whole with a drink of water. They can be taken with or without food. Your doctor will also provide you with assistance on how to take the medicine.

What are the potential side-effects (contraindications) of the stop smoking tablets?

All medication can cause side effects. Your stop smoking tablets can cause nausea, vomiting, indigestion, constipation or weakness and fatigue. Some people have reported headaches, insomnia and unpleasant dreams. The leaflet accompanying the treatment will list some of the rarer side-effects.

When answering your medical questionnaire for stop smoking medicine it is very important that you answer the questions truthfully to ensure your doctor has a full picture of your medical history before they prescribe you treatment.

How effective is the stop smoking medicine?

Curent evidence indicates that about 4 in 10 smokers who want to quit smoking will be able to do so with the help of champix. During drug trials, 44% of the group treated with champix had stopped smoking after being treated for 12 weeks, as opposed to 11% of smokers taking the placebo. Over the same duration, champix was also shown to be twice as effective as zyban (bupropion), the other main anti-smoking drug treatment.

You should not request this treatment service if you are allergic to varenicline.
