Hair Loss Retention Programme

Anytime Pharmacy's Hair Retention Programme has been designed by doctors and is clinically proven to work.

Many men are worried about losing their hair, it can be extremely stressful, but it is important that you get facts and not some quack remedy from the internet. Some baldness treatments are at best ineffective and at worst dangerous. Anytime Pharmacy is one of the only Care Quality Commission registered UK clinics and we can help you keep your hair. Since 2000, baldness and hair thinning can be treated with a drug called propecia (finasteride).

Clinical studies show that 2 out of 3 men who stay on our programme for long-term treatment will experience hair re-growth. The NHS does not pay for propecia (finasteride) due to cost. This means your doctor will have to write you a private prescription - our prices are some of the lowest around because our doctors deal directly with a large UK pharmacy.

How can Anytime Pharmacy help me?

We provide this regulated, specialist service only for men who suffer from male-pattern baldness. Your doctor can prescribe you propecia (finasteride) which is the only once-a-day pill approved by the FDA (USA Food and Drug Administration) for the treatment of certain types of male pattern hair loss in men. Current evidence indicates that two thirds of men will experience renewed hair growth. propecia (finasteride) is not available on the NHS.

All services provided by Anytime Pharmacy are confidential (we do not inform your GP) and allow you to get tested and treated within the privacy of your home and without the potential embarrassment of a face-to-face doctor consultation or the inconvenience of lengthy waiting rooms.

Choose same day click and collect from your local participating pharmacy. The benefit of collecting from your local pharmacy is that you can go to the pharmacy at a time that suits you, it's faster than a mail order delivery and no-one has to wait at home to sign for your medicine.

Male pattern baldness video

Male-pattern baldness affects 50% of men over 50. Men describe how they went bald, the stigma attached to it and how attitudes have changed.

Content Supplied by NHS Choices

Male-pattern baldness is so called because it generally follows a set pattern. The first stage is usually a receding hairline, followed by thinning of the hair on the crown and temples. This can leave a horseshoe shape of hair around the back and sides of the head. It can progress to complete baldness, but this is rare.

How does propecia work?

Clinical evidence has found that a hormone called DHT (dihyrdotestosterone) plays a key role in the development of male pattern baldness. While this hormone is essential for proper genital development in male babies, high DHT levels in adult men contribute to the shortening of the hair growth phase, ultimately thinning the hair until hair is no longer grown from the follicle. Propecia works by inhibiting DHT levels in the scalp and interrupting the natural progression of male pattern baldness.

Are you suitable for hair-loss treatment?

You need to be showing signs of male pattern baldness to obtain treatment. Your hair must be thinning at the sides/temples and in one of the following two locations: either front or top of your head.

Our hair retention programme is only for men over 18 and up to 70 years old with hair loss due to male pattern baldness. Hair loss due to any other cause may not be suitable for treatment with this programme.

How does the Anytime Pharmacy service work?

Step 1:             Register online and complete the free online medical questionnaire consultation. A doctor will review your questionnaire and, if it is safe to do so, approve you for treatment. You do not pay for your doctor consultation.
Step 2: If you are approved for treatment you will be sent a text message asking you to log back into your secure patient record. You can pay for your hair-loss treatment using a debit or credit card.
Step 3: You will be sent a FREE SMS (text message) when a doctor has sent your prescription to your nominated pharmacy. We advise you to call your nominated pharmacy to check your prescription is ready, then collect your medicine.

Why are no prices shown for Anytime Pharmacy treatment services?

Under current UK advertising law we cannot show you prescription-only-medicine (POM) prices prior to a medical consultation with a registered doctor. Once your doctor has approved you for treatment all prices are clearly displayed. Your registration and medical consultation is free and you are under no obligation to purchase any treatment.

All of our prices are fully inclusive, and so for prescription medicines the prices include the cost of the consultation, the issuing of a private prescription, and dispensing of the medicine itself. There are no hidden extras.

How to take your hair-loss treatment

You need to take one tablet once a day on an ongoing basis. If the medicine works and you stop taking it, your hair-loss will most probably start again.

What are the potential side-effects (contraindications) of this hair-loss treatment?

All medication and antibiotics can cause side effects. Your hair-loss treatment can sometimes cause a rash, and a small proportion of men may experience reduced libido (sex drive), erection problems or breast tenderness. The leaflet accompanying the treatment will list some of the rarer side-effects.

When answering your medical questionnaire for hair-loss treatment it is very important that you answer the questions truthfully to ensure your doctor has a full picture of your medical history before they prescribe you treatment.

How effective is this hair-loss treatment?

A 5-year clinical study indicated that two thirds of men who took propecia regrew hair, as measured by hair count. All of the men in the study who were not taking propecia lost hair. It normally takes three to six months of using propecia before any effect is seen, and the balding process will normally resume if treatment is stopped.

How long will I have to wait to see some results?

As with any medication different people will respond to propecia in a different way. However, based on clinical evidence here are some basic guidelines of what you can expect:

Day 1: Propecia begins working to lower DHT levels.

Month 3: You may notice that propecia is starting to slow down hair loss.

Month 6: You may see evidence of less hair loss. That's a success. Thanks to propecia, you may actually begin to see some regrowth of hair.

Month 9: If propecia is working for you, at this point you should be maintaining the hair you have. You may even grow back some of the hair you've lost.

Year 1: By now you'll know if propecia is working for you. If it's not, further treatment is not likely to help.

If you stop taking you hair-loss medicine, you will gradually lose the hair you have gained within 12 months of stopping your hair-loss treatment.

Who should not use this particular hair-loss treatment service?

You should not request this treatment service if you are allergic to finasteride, if your hair-loss is not consistent with male-pattern baldness or if you have a prostate condition.

This particular hair-loss service is not for women, the medicine is not licensed to treat hair-loss in women.

Alternate treatment options:

Patients can buy a lotion to apply directly to their scalps. Clinical research has shown that the most effective way of preventing hair-loss is through the use of oral hair-loss medicine available through this service.
